A University in Ohio is Offering Scholarships to Top ‘Fortnite’ Players

All those hours playing Fortnite: Battle Royale could earn some major cash for players.

Variety reports Ashland University in Ohio is offering scholarships to top Fortnite players, who land a spot on their esports team.

“Fortnite appeals to both the core and casual gaming audience,” said Ashland e-sports head coach Josh Buchanan in a press release, according to Cleveland. “We’re excited to provide this platform for gamers who want to showcase their skills in a more competitive space. Fortnite facilitates an environment that allows players to get creative, innovate and show off the mastery of their skills.”

Fortnite: Battle Royale became a viral hit when it was released in 2017. (Even Logic and Drake are playing.) Now, it may be joining the ranks of other popular games like League of Legends, Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Rocket League in becoming a competitive collegiate e-sport. Ashland University’s team won’t just be playing among themselves either. A number of universities including the University of Akron and Kent State University have their own varsity e-sports program. Students on the team can gain up to $4,000 in scholarship funds.

  1. The little bit of patience i've had for fortnite has instantly faded away. This game is literelly polluting the minds of people around the world. Universities known for developing us as individuals had officially clusterfucked with this hunk of overhyped garbage on the internet that salty pre-teens won't shut the fuck up about.
    I'm done

  2. Lol, the sad part is, is that in order to become the best (pro) you have to practice at least 6 hours a day. Definitely not worth a $4000 scholarship. I play 3 hrs a day and I am in the top .2% for K/D but I’m not even close to being Pro.

  3. Why? Fortnite doesn’t even have a professional setting yet. In order to play “pro” teams they need to snipe each other in the same lobby.

  4. I need this as I take gaming seriously and fortnite is a game I am very skilled at with over 2 thousand wins this could maybe get me somewhere

  5. A scholarship for playing video games? This country is either great or just plain fucking stupid, idk..or maybe im just bitter because im a dropout and now driving a truck cross country..
