Terrifying body camera showed the moment a dog mauled an animal control officer in Chandler.
Maricopa County Animal Control Ofc. Rick Alva had no way of knowing a routine house visit would turn into one he would never forget.
On Nov. 7, body camera captured his attempts to get the owner of a home to answer.
“Hello, anyone home?” he’s heard saying on the tape.
Ofc. Alva and Chandler police were there to take a dog that courts had ruled as dangerous. All was calm at first.
“I don’t hear any barking. Do you?” one of the officers said.
Suddenly, the door opened and a giant Rottweiler attacked Alva.
The entire attack lasted only a few seconds, yet he was badly hurt.
“He’s gonna be out for an indefinite amount of time,” said Jose Santiago with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control. “This is a hurt not only for us as an agency, but it’s a hurt for the community.”
Sources tell Arizona’s Family Alva is now preparing for his third surgery.
It is not yet known if he will be able to return to full-time duty.
The Rottweiler, in this case, was shot and killed.
Animal control records indicate this was the animal’s fourth and final attack in just a year-and-a-half.
Ofc. Alva is now considering a possible civil lawsuit against the dog’s owner.
