Jemele Hill Talks Trump’s Kaepernick Invite, Twitter Threats, and Rockets-Warriors | Out of Bounds

On today’s episode of #OutofBounds, Chief Correspondent and Senior Columnist with ESPN’s The Undefeated Jemele Hill joins Gilbert Arenas, Pierce Simpson, and Adam Caparell to discuss NBA playoff action and the intersection of sports, politics, and social media.

The Rockets advanced to the Western Conference Finals by beating the Jazz 112-102 in Houston. After Chris Paul took over with 41 points, 7 rebounds, and 10 assists, the panel breaks down how CP3 changed his game to boost the Rockets.

The Warriors also advanced to the WCF, defeating the Pelicans 113-104 with a balanced offensive attack from Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. As good a team as the Rockets are, is there any way they can beat Golden State’s Hamptons 5/Death Lineup and depth?

Looking ahead to tonight’s Game 5, when Boston will look to close out Philly at home, OOB debates whether the young 76ers — who got their swagger back in their first elimination game after seeming overwhelmed in Beantown — will overcome the hostile playoff atmosphere to force a Game 6. Also, Gil questions Philly’s use of Markelle Fultz and Jemele explains why she’s not surprised that the Celtics have performed so well in the playoffs.

In “The Step-Back,” the panel talks about the ugly side of sports social media after comedian Andrew Polk tweeted that he hoped Draymond Green would get shot in the face. Jemele — who’s no stranger to social media controversy — breaks down the line you shouldn’t cross. Gil explains why some athletes should respond to haters online and others should not. Plus, everyone shares the ugliest thing someone has said about them on social media.

After President Donald Trump reportedly gave approval to invite Colin Kaepernick to the White House for a series of conversations on race involving athletes and musicians, Jemele takes issue with the motivations behind the move. The crew asks what Kaepernick would gain or lose by accepting the invitation. Also, Gil identifies the Trump critics whom the Donald doesn’t go after on Twitter and why.

Finally, OOB discusses the NFL denying running back Mike James’s request to use cannabis as a painkiller instead of powerful, addictive opioids. Jemele offers insight into the league’s continuing resistance to the plant, and Gil explains the difference between treating pain with weed and getting high.

  1. Pierce some Colin Kaepernick is shedding light on 'all the injustices in America'…. doesn't he mean 'some of the issues faced by the black community in America'? Sorry my bad, I'm just whitesplaining.

  2. Trump talks to all kinds of people. He favors the "regular" people. Not that Kaepernick is regular, but Trump OBVIOUSLY wants peace and discussions about how to obtain it. So fuck you punks, you don't know what you're talking about.

  3. Jemele is trash, shes talks without saying anything. All she tries to do is create click bait headlines, I mean look at all the nonsports topics they covered while she was on.
